Heatwave Tips

So people it’s hot… and hot… and hot…

40+ degrees and you sweat like someone turned a tap on and forgot to close it… I know some other R-rated expressions but let’s just leave it at that.

Here are a couple of coping tips to survive in a country that have no air conditioning in their offices… I mean really… NO aircon! 😱

So first things first…

Air out the office, house or flat as early in the morning as possible… for a South African this was new terminology. Trust me the Germans are very insistent on this and you know what? They are right! Another word for it is “stoßlüften”, directly translated into push airing… So what is airing out? Airing out is exactly what it says, open ALL the windows and doors, ideally you want to create a flow of air through the whole area… if is not 25 degrees at 6am already this is quite pleasant. BUT… do not leave it open, wait around 30 minutes, close everything and then you roll down all the blinds and everything that stops the sun from blasting on the windows. And it stays cool.

Around 3 pm it still gets hotter, but it’s manageable…

Invest in some fans… interestingly enough I never owned a fan in South Africa… but thank heavens for it though… sleep would be a thing I only dream of…

Hang wet washing (don’t spin dry it too dry) in the house. And have a fan close by that blows sideways over the wet clothes… instant home made aircon…

Cold foot-baths… with some bath salts… 😉

Freeze water in a normal hot water bottle and bring it to bed at sleeping time… ice cold cooling for whatever area you need. Just remember the water melts, so don’t forget to close it properly.

Wet cloths wrapped around your head or your neck…

Drink lots and lots of water. This actually works out ok. Because you feel the heat more than one does in an aircon environment you are also naturally more thirsty…

Refreshing spray or perfumed handkerchief, good for being mobile.

Forget makeup… it runs off your face in any case… So I stick with my anti blemish and mascara…

Water your plants! Imagine how they feel?

Good sunscreen for when you are outside… although I must admit… I am quite anti sun… So if you see a figure quickly walking from one shady spot to the next… yep, that would be me!

Move whatever you need to do to the times where it’s cooler… either in the mornings early or late at night. Trust me, to do normal household stuff you don’t have energy for.

So this is my summery summary… 🙂 Have a great summer!
